Nikola Motor claims doubling of li-ion battery performance

This press release is getting my bullshit-ometer twitching. Feels like they are ticking just too many boxes. At the very least it looks a fair way off if they are only now hiring a bunch of

Improving density to 500 Whr/kg would be a huge deal and isn't outside the realm of possibility AFAIU.  The real question is where along the commercial readiness curve they are and what their specific invention is.  Obviously the idea of reducing the weight of structural materials that don't contribute to capacity has occurred to anyone in the field.  I don't know enough about the field to know what research demos are out there, but honestly this sounds like "someone made a slightly more manufacturable process for a technique that has only been practical in research labs, so we hired them."  That *could* be the start of a legitimate revolution, or it could be another of dozens of ideas that go nowhere or are still waiting for another few key advances.

Umm, 500 Wh/kg, so only needs a 22 times improvement to match diesel or petrol!

This does make the idea of electric vehicles somewhat doubtful, a 44 tonne artic can carry up to 1000l of diesel, lots of batteries.

Sure, but from that chart only the batteries can be re-used  :D

Sure, battery recharged 2000 times, diesel used once, diesel only needs to be improved 90 times.

:bullshit: If they had something to demo, wouldn't have to wait until "fall 2020".
