Totem Pole PFC at 300W is a marketing gimmick?
« on: March 28, 2023, 08:08:49 pm »
Hi,
At 300W, 100-265VAC, surely totem pole isnt much more efficient than straight BCM boost PFC?
Totem pole controllers are always digital, so they consume probably about 2W bias power anyway.
Is it worth it for a 300W PFC?

I mean, what about BCM Boost PFC, with the two primary ground referenced diodes of the diode bridge made synchronous?......that surely has gotta beat totem pole PFC on efficiency at 75-300W?

At some low power level, "Ye Olde" BCM boost PFC beats Totem pole on efficiency, where is that power level.....?

..And here we have it.....it says for 300W applications, Plain old BCM Boost PFC , and totem pole PFC, have the same losses..

The below is surely a marketing gimmick?

They want to flog more GaN?

Hi,
Does anyone know  which semico makes Totem pole PFC controllers, and has the datasheet availabel on their website?
Onsemi and monolithicpower.com do them, but you cant get the datasheet.

Hi,
The following touts a 300W Totem pole PFC...

The following says that at 300W, Totem pole PFC is not worth while (at 1:30)
https://www.monolithicpower.com/en/catalog/category/view/id/995/

Who is right?

Also, Power Integrations have invested heavily, and built up a large stable of PFC controllers for 75-1000W, the "HiperPFS" range.....they are not trembling in their boots that Totem Pole PFC is going to wipe out their entire range, not at all...but why not?.......the demand in everything these days is for "smaller and smaller", and "more and more efficient"....and SMPS totally enclosed in plastic.....so why is Totem Pole PFC just so utterly  failing to make the inroads expected of it?

There is not one correct answer, there almost never is. Successful engineering is often about tradeoffs, compromises and local optima, not the "one true solution that is best in all cases".

Local optima can often shift as technology develops, especially in new and emerging fields like GaN power conversion.
