Offline GaN SMPS will survive blown FET?
« on: March 28, 2023, 05:39:40 pm »
Hi,
What do you reckon the chances are that this GaN FET blowing up has taken out the control circuitry aswell?
It blew up on 240VAC.
Its the hi side primary  FET in a "very modified half bridge converter"
I  accidentally powered up and forgot i had open circuited the high voltage reset capacitor....so the FET got 650V+ drain to source and blew up.

With Si FETs i often fInd you can get away with it, and the control circuitry and gate drive cctry etc would often be ok...what about with GaN?

...

Surely our 'reckonings of chances' are completely pointless. It either has or it hasn't - you need to debug / test it to determine which!

I would not agree with that. Quite often the gate driver goes with the FET. I had once weird problems when the gate driver IC was partially damaged so that it's UVLO threshold voltage increased a bit but it worked otherwise, causing random issues near minimum operating voltage, that I made it a habit to always replace the gate drivers, too.

Same here. My rule is to always replace the gate drivers in case a FET blows up. If not, chances are high the same device returns in a couple of weeks for another FET replacement.

Things are even worse for a prototype; you will want to make sure all parts are in excellent condition. I make it a point to use only quality (A-brand) parts for prototypes.

There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.
