High voltage capacitors

Hi all,

First time poster on this community, thank you for having me!

I'm in need of a capacitor which is capable of storing at least 31.2kV and a capacitance of roughly 1uF.  Would anybody know where I can find this cap, new or used?

If the rated voltage is higher that's fine.  Also, if I need to put a few in series/parallel to get my required specs, that's all good too.

I've checked all the standard suppliers, Mouser, Digikey, etc.; this seems to be a little too large for them.  Any leads would be appreciated.

You're going to have to be more specific as to what you need this capacitor to do. This sounds like an energy storage (aka pulsed power) type of thing, in which case the construction of the capacitor - particularly the stray inductance - tends to be the most important factor. Otherwise you can stack a bunch of 50kV ceramic "door knob" capacitors in parallel to get to get to 1uF.

Yup, just from the pictures, that's what I'm looking for.  Although Eaton does not list their specs .

This is for an impulse generator that I'm building.  A schematic is attached.  The ≈31.2kV, 1uF cap would be capacitor C₁.

Take a look at surplussales.com.  They have several types near the capacity and voltage rating you're looking for.

What are you using for a switch in your design?

Maybe a color TV tube? Leyden jar?

Awesome, surplussales has three (3) I can put in parallel.  Looking to make the purchase by end of day tomorrow, if I don't come across anything else, this is probably what I'll go with.

Really cool site for the higher kV equipment, was not aware of this supplier.

As for the switches, I'm using Ross Relays https://www.rossengineeringcorp.com/hv-control/hv-relays/e-series-12kv-60kv.html.  The lead time is forever on these, but the quality/lifetime is outstanding.

hvstuff has more reasonable prices.  Unfortunately, they are not returning emails regarding lead time or in-stock confirmation.  Too bad, a few of those 20kV models would be perfect.  Thanks for the lead.
