22xx Knob repair; Broken Clips
« on: November 10, 2023, 07:39:56 pm »
Hello everyone, I recently acquired a Tektronix 2230 from eBay, and It came with a broken knob. One of the B trigger knob's internal clips had snapped off, and I used cyanoacrylate to fix it. It made a strong bond but it wouldn't fit on the white knob holder.

So I added extra force and the knob just shattered. Luckily the knob exterior could be fixed easily, but one clip had disintegrated into a million pieces. The other clip still remains though.

Maybe someone that has experience with this problem could give me tips on how to effectively remount the knob securely but still have it removable for future repairs. I don't really want to glue the knob back on.

I have always wondered why Tek had to choose this type of knob mounting on 22xx series scopes. Makes it a real pain to service the front panel board for these.
Hehe, spooked my friends with an exploding electrolytic capacitor the other day 😁.

I consider those to be non-removable. Fortunately there are few repairs where it's required. If you do need to remove or install one, use a hair dryer to warm up the plastic. I've been selling those on the auction site and have to emphasize this with every buyer. Never work with them without pre-heating, you will break the clips otherwise. Even with pre-heating, the clips are still likely to break.

In your case, I would glue the knob back on with hot melt glue and try not to worry too much about it. If you need to remove it in the future, isopropyl alcohol or careful heat application will help break the bond.

I have had the 22xx series too and all were removable, but brittle after that time.

Maybe you have a friend, or a local "Makers" group nearby, that has a 3D printer? HTH.
