Acer Aspire F5-573G Laptop - diode replacement / schematic
« on: January 02, 2021, 06:52:55 am »
Hey all.

In typical form the wife's laptop was no power up on NYD.

Opened it up and tracked it to a dead short near the inlet jack - in this case a diode.

I only have partial markings PJ6437 then what looks like "1V". I don't have callipers handy (I'm at home not in the shop for a change). Looks 1806 sized (~4 x ~2 mm).

Have been trawling the interwebs endlessly for a schematic / boardview.

Can anyone help me with this?

Cheers!

Does it work if you just remove the diode?

I've seen such a small diode used as reverse polarity / overvoltage "protection" once before, but as it was way too small for this purpose it just turned into a short circuit. Removed it, and job was done.

I suspect this is the exact same scenario.

I will test...

It's a TVS diode which protects from overvoltage.

Thanks.

Done the BadCaps rego and waiting for the approval link so I can have a look at the PDF and work out what value it's supposed to be. Not sure if E5 / F5 boards will be that similar - we'll see...

Here is the PDF (don't you just hate those you-need-to-register-before-you-can-see-the-attachments-uploaded-by-our-members forums?).

There is a TVS diode on page 32 at circuit reference PD5. The part number is P4SMAFJ20.

P4SMAFJ20, Panjit, unidirectional TVS diode, 20V, 400W, marking IV:

Confirming that the laptop boots up OK after removal of the TVS diode.

Have noticed the battery is detected but isn't charging. Not sure if this is a dead battery or dead charge circuit yet...  :-//
