Advantest R9211E
« on: April 11, 2020, 12:55:35 pm »
Hi folks,

last week I had a R9211E coming in, ordered on saturday, arrived on thuesday from Belgium.
It's a 10mHz ... 100kHz Spectrum Analyzer aka Dynamic Signal Analyzer aka FFT Analyzer, fully functioning. The screen is working as well, though some signs of deep burn marks visible and one of the feets was missing and another one slightly broken.
It was a bit dirty, so I first gave it fully cleaning with magic sponge. All that is left are some scratches in the coating, but that is not of a problem at all, as all the metall parts are aluminium, so no risk of corrosion here.
I also dismanteled it, gave it a cleaning inside and a first visual inspection. All caps still looked okay and the NiCd battery was still reading 3.6V. I might give it a replacement at some point, but not for now. Fan was cleaned and fan cover replaced, which was a bit crusty.
Fortunately there is a 3D CAD model available on thingiverse, so I had two new feets printed in black PLA, that perfectly fit.

As a new CRT is rather expensive:

and I already had a 6.4" TFT VGA display in the junk box, I decided to order some converter instead:

I'm now waiting for it to arrive, so I can start the display conversion.
Powering the unit on the fan noise is rather low, given the unit is about 30 years old. Overall a nice unit, that I can recommend so far.
Already ran some first measurements and GPIB readings, which I will show soon.

Just checked the description... thought the screen burnin was in it, apparently not. I appologize for that, it was an oversight, not bad will. Hope it doesn't bother you too much  :'(

Everything is fine, I replace the display anyhow. What makes me a little bit wondering, as the description I found for the unit speaks about an 8" CRT (see attachment), while a 6.4", 4:3 LCD seems to perfectly fit.

Attached is the baseline for comparison, with the input shorted.

Edit: Couldn't resist to have a brief look to the amplifier. Turns out and this is no surprise, that we find some NE5534 together with some NEC µPA70A and NEC µPA71A FETs.
Attached is a table I found, in case you are looking for replacement.

The original NiCd backup battery was quite old and needed replacement as it started leaking already. So I did that. The NiMH is a lil bit higher capacity - actually 4 times higher - but something that was available off the shelf and it works. Unit now remembers settings and dates again.
I quite like the DSA, in particular the capabilities it offers, including lin or log sweep for frequency analysis, two differential inputs, cross-correlation and a lot more. Not sure how it competes with HP branded DSAs though.

I have a similar analyzer R9211A, and I need help.
It broke, one day it crashed, I restarted it and it didn't get up anymore.
Only seems to be 1 or 3 beeps. all voltages are present, nothing looks damaged. The analyzer inside looks unused.

Does anyone have EPROM batch for it?
Or any idea where to start?
