Seeking replacement rubber compresion seals for cable gland
« on: August 20, 2023, 09:11:50 am »
Ok, I give up. What are these things called?

I've spend a good while searching, Mouser, Digikey and eBay, but cannot find replacement seals for these cable glands - surely this is a thing? After all they are perishable, as evidenced by the photo, while the rest of the gland remains perfectly usable...

When faced with situations like that, I resort to a local hardware store, auto parts suppliers, and/or small engine shops.  Faucet washers, other rubber washers and rubber/silicone tubing (e.g, fuel line, vent lines, etc.) will often substitute.  Even stacked O-rings might help.  If you need to cut rubber, use a sharp blade and lubricate it with soapy water.  PVC tubing cutters als work well with larger tubing.

If price is not an issue, McMaster Carr has a lot of rubber parts.

Cable glands are still sold and in use. Exist in different metals and plastic. Any DIY shop should have some. Recover the rubber joint from a new one and put it in yours. That little metal washer is key to being able to turn the washer as it kinda slips.
When it fits stop using the hammer

This is one of those things that is never intended to be repaired, just replaced.  So just like ball bearings when the shield or ball retainer fails you just replace the whole thing.  If you are doing a museum quality restoration and want to retain the exact original appearance your best bets will be to do as Swake says and recover something usable from a similar new gland seal, or fabricate your own replacements from rubber or neoprene.  A laser cutter should make neat work of the job, perhaps you have a mate who owns one, or can talk a nearby advertising shop to do it.

Hi Lomax,

have you tried to search for "M20" or "PG13.5" and  "Pflitsch" on digikey/mouser?
Tons of glands and sealing-rings.

Good luck
