Another Fluke 97 el backlight repair.
« on: January 05, 2018, 02:02:22 am »
I get a fluke 97 from my work company, it was stored for a long time and they decide to dispose (for my luck)

It was in pretty good condition, look's like nobody used for a decade.
The battery was dead rusty everywhere, anyway... I can use new Ni-Mh batteries. but need to recharge outside of the scope.
I cleaned the batteries contacts turn on and working fine... except the backlight panel  :-BROKE

I saw in some thread peoples with the same issue. and figured out that my 97 is very different inside, so i decide to post some pictures of mine:

I just replace the capacitor (on E quadrant) this 10uf cap was on short heating up the mosfet on (D quadrant)

Thanks to a tip from here (i dont remember who), now it's working... but it's not so bright as i tought.

The original yellow holster was deteriorated and i did a 3d printed one.

I'm not good with 3d draws, i did what i can  :-// later i will try to improve this one.
If somebody can do the 3d draw of this holster please share to us! if someone want my .obj draw i can also post here.
Now waiting from china a new el sheet and try to replace.

checked the service manual   your board is not the same indeed, maybe you have the first version revision ???  maybe ask fluke for the part number  telling them the part numbers written on your pcb ???

fluke on the service manual says : bcx54-16 transistor ??? as power output driver ...  but your board is different ...

check your solders on the transistor, seem bad to me ...

lucky guy to get this piece of equipment :)

The El sheet just arrive. The illuminated area fit right on lcd, but needed to cut the edges a little bit.

It was pretty easy to remove the retention clips,

The white el sheet is little brighter, a little more visible.

The el sheet yet not so bright like new LED's :-//  i will try to think how to replace for LED's

Any chance of getting a link for that el sheet? All the ones I've looked at previously needed cutting and the terminals were in the wrong place. That one looks about right!

This one still need to cut the edge, but just the tranparent layer. the piture product was shown the terminals on side and the mine come with center terminals.
I removed the shrink sleeve and wires replace for another thinner tape/wire, fold the terminal to inside and soldering on pcb. I replace the silicone rubber to 2 pieces of EVA foam.
(sorry, i just forgot to take photos on this steps)  :palm:

I’d love to know what you come up with. I could use a thin-as-EL LED backlight for some other repairs/mods.
