Title: Another TV Repair... Apparently sound intermittent
Post by: edy on June 14, 2016, 12:05:34 am
Hi folks,

I have a colleague who is going to bring me his 52" TV in the next few weeks that he was going to dump by the curb. Apparently, the image works fine but it has problems with sound. He says the sound cuts off and then doesn't work. Sometimes by restarting the TV he gets sound back.

I don't know much more about it at this point, but I wanted to see if anyone else has any clues as to what may be going on. As soon as I get the TV, I'll provide more information. My suspicion is there is an amp driving the speakers or a separate power line supplying it from the power supply, and maybe some capacitor on there has failed.

I'm going to check visually first for any obvious blown caps, then see if I can still hear sound from the audio output jacks/ports. If it is only the speakers, I can at least trace it to the speaker drivers. Otherwise if all sound fails it could be something with the audio DACs. Will be interesting to see what is going on, what brand of TV it is and how old it is.

Possibly caps but the first thing that comes to mind is reseating any audio connectors....really, it could be that easy/simple.

Or audio menu set to "SAP" or "Second Audio Program". In this case there may be sound on some channels, possibly a different language or no sound on others.
