Ansmann Energy 8 Repair - Beginner needs some help
« on: October 23, 2014, 09:50:43 pm »
Hey beginner electronic hobbyist here,

My Ansmann Energy 8 battery charger stopped working some time ago, I opened it to see if it's just a bad cap or if something is blown.
When I plugged it in I noticed that the switching power supply is making a 2hz ticking/chirping noise , I figured its the power supply trying to start. To see if there is a short either in the power supply or in the rest of the circuit I desoldered the PSU and it was still ticking, so I figured the fault must be there, buuut after some trying and soldering to find the fault, I plugged it in and the PWM switch blew up in smoke :scared: (maybe it was broken from the start and I just gave it the rest? The PCB under it was darkened)

This is the part where I should probably get some help, I figured I should replace the PSU entirely instead of replacing the TOP223Y PWM switch and most of the other components because there's still a fault in there somewhere.

Can you please help me figure out what voltage outputs this PSU has so I can replace it?

(btw. I wasn't sure if this belongs in Repairs or Beginners, I hope it's right here)

Probably there was a shorted diode after transformer in the beginning (D8). Just try to find the fault on secondary side and replace that top223. Also check that big resistor near the top223 was not blown together with it. Seems that it is 2.2 ohm. Also worth to check every diode on that pcb if wasnt blown together with topswitch too, will take less than a 10 minutes with a multimeter.

Also check D9 on the main PCB. For me it seems that a few parts of this PSU actually are located on the main board.

I already checked all the diodes and the caps (i have no ESR meter but the caps should all be fine). I checked all the components i could (resistors, diodes, caps, transistors), this was the process after which it blew, and i did solder everything back in correctly ^^
This is why i gave up on fixing the power supply, buying a replacement should be cheaper hence I am afraid that when I replace all the components it just doesn't work and I wasted the money.
Any help on which replacement PSU i need (output voltages)?

Well... thanks, but this was not very helpfull. I want to repair the unit i already own and understand the electronics behind it, if i wanted to buy a new one, i would have alredy did that.

Look at the voltage rating on the output filtering capacitors and try supplying the charger with half of the rated voltage of the capacitors.  If it does not turn on check to see if there is a power supply good signal that is required and feed it an appropriate voltage based on half of that circuits filter capacitor value.  If it still does not work try 3/4 of the capacitor voltage rating.  If it is a multi voltage supply hope that it uses standard pc power supply voltages and if not it would be better to try and repair the original power supply or get a new charger depending on what your time and money is worth to you.
