axiom pro 61 main board
« on: April 01, 2019, 05:41:05 am »
I thought I was going to merely have to replace the usb on my axiom pro 61. Turns out the smd's on L19, L20, L21 were broken of from the usb being loose. I can not find a schematic anywhere and it looks like finding one is a common problem. I can not do this fix myself, however, before I take the board to a guy to fix it, he has to know what is supposed to go in L19, L20, L21  slots to know what to put in them. I am pretty sure that all of the L slots have the same smd inserted but need to make sure. I can attach a pic of my board.

I see lots of 2 micro henrys  inductors on usb ports, it could be a good guess ??

The best would be to have a working board, if you manage to find one ?? and measure them with an good lcr meter ...

For an example thios search :   see the 8  first answers

OK, from the bit of digging that I did,  found out that they are probably ferrite beads for EMI suppression.

https://www.ti.com/sc/docs/apps/msp/intrface/usb/emitest.pdf

This has a section on USB EMI suppression, and suggested parts. (page 12 (14 in the PDF) )

https://www.murata.com/~/media/webrenewal/support/library/catalog/products/emc/emifil/c35e.ashx

and this datasheet says it's a BLM18BB121SN1p 120ohm±25% - 500mA 0.30ohm -55°C to +125°C part.

http://datasheetz.com/data/Filters/EMI%20Ferrite%20Beads%20and%20Chips/490-1020-2-datasheetz.html

I hope you find this helpful. I learned something today!  :)

Edit : That's for the datalines, the powerline one is different.

Thanks a bunch! I will read over that stuff and let you know what happens. It is hard to search for something I know nothing about.

Yes it is hard to find a replacement board. Plus I figured this should be an easy fix till I ran into the smds that were busted. Replacing the usb would have been okay. Thanks for the info.

How did you know what chip it was to look up? or is that usb's in general?

I looked up the chip the USB port was connected to in your picture, and looked at how the usb should be wired. There was no sign of the L19 L20 L21 in the datasheet though - which lead me to look why they were there, and that lead to ferrite beads and EMI suppression. :)

Hey, I want to give you the scoop. I got someone to solder the beads on the board. I thought I ordered the correct ones, as in the PG series, they only had one kind. In going back and looking, the PG that arrived was not the BLM21PG221SN1, it was BLM21PG121BH1D. And the BB series (BLM18BB121SN1p), arrived as (BLM18BB121SN1D), so not sure what the difference is yet between the p on the end and the d, but we put that one (BLM18BB121SN1D) in the three spots that were damaged and replaced the USB. It turns on and Ableton Live is reacting to the controller, but I can not get any sound yet. I am not familiar with midi programs or controllers yet, but I will be soon. I checked the device manager and the driver is not reading. I checked online and people have had problems with it for Windows 10. M-Audio's forum says they don't recommend it for Windows 10 because it is not supported yet for it. There are some people saying another driver will work and I just need to find which one to download. I read more on the pages you linked for me and am a little concerned the wrong beads were used and could possibly affect the sound, but I am optimistic about it. I am pretty sure this puppy will start barking soon!!!! Thanks again!!!!!

It turns on and Ableton Live is reacting to the controller
Then data is passing through the port, so the ferrites are working as intended.
The Axiom is a pure controller, so audio doesn't pass into or out of it at all, only control messages. Nothing about it can affect the sound.

I agree, if it's showing up in device manager, the beads are working. It wouldn't show up in device manager if they didn't, as it wouldn't receive the USB ID to recognise the device. So the hardware is good.

As for the driver, try running the installer in compatibility mode, and see if that helps it. You can do this by right clicking the installer file, go into properties, into the compatibility tab, and then choose win 7 as the OS.  It may be enough to get it to work. It may also be worth trying it as an administrator, and also maybe try running Ableton Live as an administrator, as I find a lot of times with older hardware, it is just permission problems in newer OS's. Older software isn't aware of the newer OS's security protocols, and can end up blocked in parts of the system by the OS. Administrator mode can bypass this.
