Dang the whole AAA split open down the length! I thought it would be just be the cap on the end shooting out like it tends to do with electrolytic caps that have the vent fail. |

it develops alot of strenght in that crimped area so it might not always be the weakest link, and with cheap batteries the body can also be severely corroded. In fact, the end cap seal might acutally protect the crimped area, so that might be the only place its not corroded they plate the steel can so it does not rust I think. This is hard to do in the corrosive high pressure environment of a battery |

It is the first time I hear about an exploding cell, but I also have seen a few cases that were evident the gas leaked at high velocity, hinting of high pressure inside. One of the saddest for me was a Duracell that took my beloved HP95LX - the white corrosive substance was clearly visible - it corroded all the multi conductor flat cables and several parts of the PCB |
