B&D MM525 electric mower motor repair
« on: June 11, 2020, 12:22:41 pm »
Hello Everyone,

I have the above electric mower, it uses a 3.5HP permanent magnet DC motor, running from 120VAC, using a big rectifier block.
The mower must have ingested a small stone, one of the magnets in the stator cracked, about 1/4 of it broke off into a few pieces, the rotor jammed.
A replacement magnet ring is quite pricey: https://www.ereplacementparts.com/magnet-ring-p-95757.html
As I have all the pieces, any chance of gluing up the broken magnet - or is it totally hopeless?
Would I use epoxy as glue, or something else?

Thanks for any comments!
Peter

If you have a way to make each piece stay where it needs to be
cyano super glue may work best. There should be enough of a
crystalline type structure on the broken surface that super glue
will hold up well even in the modest heat inside the motor. My
experience with broken magnets is that they sometimes want
to push away the broken piece. You often see the broken piece
spun around backwards and sticking to where it came from.
One thing is that the magnetic field will be weaker than it once
was and the motor torque will be reduced, how much is anyone's
guess. Re-gluing cracked magnets on magnetron tubes shifts
their operating point far enough that it is usually a death sentence.
