Best laid plans; Pot upgrade KL283 fail
« on: February 08, 2022, 03:50:43 am »
Pleased with the overall performance and stability of the inexpensive KL283 DC load but the pots are WAY too coarse. The fine pot acts more like the coarse and for lower voltage or current settings I find the coarse pot virtually unusable.

No problem, I naively figured. Replace them with some good multi-turn ones.

Ack! The fine tune one has six terminals! I couldn’t find even a single turn to match let alone a bulkier 3 or 5 turn example.

It appears only two of the terminals are used and they both appear to connect in parallel with the coarse pot. So then it occurred to me maybe I could just replace the coarse pot with a nice multi-turn and make the fine one superfluous but the PCB mounts up tight to the front panel with the body of the pots flush so any pot thicker than the original just isn’t going to work. In the attached pic the fine pot is the lower six terminal one, the coarse three terminal above. The other channel is identical and is equally difficult to make anything but coarse adjustments

If anyone has an idea how to improve this situation, please share.

Thanks,
Jeff
