Best way to interface with this 2x5 1.27mm
« on: February 20, 2022, 08:19:49 pm »
Hi
Playing with this WiFi AP.. Trying to interface with what I think is JTAG, But I'm not sure about the connector that goes here...
Not a normal smd IDC 1.27mm.

Does anybody know what it is? Is it something standard or more of a custom thing for a pogo pin jig at production/testing?
What is the simplest way of attaching this to a jtag interface? if soldering wires on to this is the answer.. what kind of tiny wire would that be?

Looks like it could be a foot print for one of the tag-connect range of connectors.

Edit:

I would say, "yes, tag connect":

Anybody got a syringe I can use to squeeze the magic smoke back into this?

I think it's designed for use with something like this : https://www.tag-connect.com/product/tc2050-idc-050-stdc14

also referred as  plug-of-nails or something like that.

Another name for which  is "pogo pins."  You can assemble your own.  The PCB holes are for alignment.

Wow, thanks for the fast answers! Love you guys!

So it looks super expensive to get that single connector for this project. So I might as well add my 3d-printing hobby into this. After a quick look on thingiverse I found https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3786118

Which should be a great start because it looks to have the correct dimensions so I don't need to measure. just need to find some cheap pins to add them in. But this is really testing the limits of my FDM-printers resolution.. I still can do some tweaks though..

I could also just solder wires on but building my own connector sounds much more fun! Kind of have a feeling I will end up with the wires straight to the pads though..

Not expensive at all and no 3D required.  Just get the pogo pins and an empty 2 row X5 connector with the right pitch.

The difficult bit isn't getting a few pogo pins together in the right pattern, it's holding them onto the board.

The Tag-Connect connectors are ridiculously overpriced, but the fundamental idea of them is right - some precise pins to locate into tooling holes on the board and some kind of clip to pass through other holes in the board to provide retention force for the pogo pins. Now, if they were ~$10 each instead of ~$60 each I'd probably already have a selection of them.

Yea, tell me about it.. they have great margins on this simple adapter too: https://www.tag-connect.com/product/tc2050-arm2010-arm-20-pin-to-tc2050-adapter
I made an inquiry at a alibaba store that might sell one for cheap but I think the price they show is a placeholder..

I used the tag-connect a few years ago at a job. Used them for flashing controllers and testing PCBs. Agreed, the price for a hobbyist is nuts. More recently I got a thing from Sparkfun for flashing AVR chips without having to put the programming connector on the PCB (same idea as the tag-connect). They use two PCBs with spacers to align the pogo pins.

with this or tag-connect, it works best for a quick flash/test since you have to press it down. The tag-connect came with things to slip over the alignment pins to hold it on the board... but that was clunky. When I used them on a job, the tag-connect probes were incorporated into a test fixture which held them down. For a one-off thing, I'd solder wires. It's a cool idea for production to remove the need for a connector.

Yea, tell me about it.. they have great margins on this simple adapter too:

The pogo pins I bought have more than 3 mm of movement.  That is not a "great margin."  That is an enormous margin.

I think you'll find that he's talking about margins of the fiduciary kind, not the fiducial kind.

Good point.  I am a bit of an academic.
