Best way to remove solder mask?
« on: February 21, 2015, 03:36:00 am »
What is the best way to remove solder mask?  I am referring to that green tinted clear coat that goes over circuit board traces.  I have some delicate traces that I need to repair and don't want to damage them further by scraping with an exacto knife.  Thanks!

A fibreglass pencil may rub it away.

I always use a sharp exacto knife or equivalent and then I just scrub it off. May not be the best option, but it works like a charm and its fast.
Trying is the first step towards failure

Some extremely fine sandpaper would probably work ok, 1000grit maybe.
I still prefer a blade though, as long as you angle it and scrape along the surface in the correct direction it's very hard to cut tracks.

(One direction it will dig-in and cut tracks. The other direction it will only scrape based on how hard you press)

I 2nd the fiberglass pen , mostly used so far with the counterfeit caps leaking on traces .
After rubbing to clean copper , wipe with alcohol and re-coat where needed .

Fiberglass pen for larger areas. Surgical knife with blade #15 for precise small areas.

I usually use a round-edged blade to do the initial prepwork ie. bare copper, then the fibreglass pencil to prepare the tracks for tinning.  It gives a much better finish.
