Boot problem Agilent E4417A EPM-P Series Power Meter.
« on: November 21, 2022, 04:00:17 pm »
Hi, I'm having an issue with an Agilent RF Power meter.
Until recently it was working perfectly.
When connected to the mains outlet the Power led is illuminated but pushing the button has no effect.
The instrument will not boot up.

Weird thing. If I unplug the instrument and hold my finger on the power button, plug in the power cord it will boot up correctly.
I have checked all the various fuses, there are a pair on the mains power connector and one inside the case on the power board.

I did notice a 3V Lithium battery soldered onto what looks like the main processor board. This battery measured 0.9v without the power cord plugged in and 2V with the instrument turned on.
Any help appreciated, i'm thinking that the 3v battery at least needs replacing.

The battery does need to be replaced, but I don't think that is the problem.  I have fixed a few of these and the main problem is the membrane keypad FPC.   Replacements are available from China and they are really cheap.   However, they are a pain to replace.   Another thing about the Chinese replacement part is that the standby LED is red instead of orange.

I should add, change the battery first (it needs it anyway).  If it fixes the problem please post here.

I had a very similar problem with my EP4418B power meter, diagnosed & fixed here:

It might not be exactly the same fault, but it may help you

All sorted,
Replacement battery fixed the issue.
Also noticed that there is a pre boot check for the lithium battery. It passed.

Good to know that fixed the problem.  Let us know if it fails again.

Hi, of course here we are a year later and it's failed again.
The 3v battery was reading 2v, so swapped it out, again.

This time no luck.  I'm thinking of trying the membrane keypad repair.
