Bose QuietComfort 35 II - burned up IC identification
« on: June 26, 2020, 01:30:26 am »
I have attached photos of the IC that has burned up. I believe it burned up when I plugged my headphones into my 65 watt Apple power supply, however I've been plugging my headphones in to that USB-C power supply almost daily for 2 years now without issue until today, so not sure how much that actually had to do with it.

Anyway, I have taken the headphones apart and found this IC burned up and have searched all around the internet and cannot identify it, hoping someone here can help!

I believe it is a power IC? It is soldered to the board by 3 pins on two sides (6 solder points total). It also appears to be engraved with the letters "SKB".

Most likely simply dual pass-through ESD protection device. Something like USBLC6-2P6. https://www.st.com/resource/en/datasheet/usblc6-2.pdf

I have just measured it with calipers, it is 2mm x 2mm and 0.8mm in height.

Also thank you wrapper for the lead!

I have now found two ICs with this package size, both of them being "White LED Drivers". There are 4 LEDs on this board (they're surrounded by that black foam).

Thoughts on if this could be what it is?

Nope. Nobody places something like this besides USB connector, it does not need any LED driver, not to say which drives a whole LED array for illumination and needs comparably large inductor. And my suggestion was not just a some random guess but something with 95%+ probability to be true.

Thanks again wraper!

I have done more research and agree with you.

I have also narrowed it down to one of these 5 chips (overlook the two results with more than 6 pins):

Will probably order one of each, any suggestion on which one you think it is?

TPS25200DRVR/TPS25200DRVT, Texas Instruments, 2.5-V-6.5-V, 60mΩ, 0.085-2.9A eFuse with reverse current blocking when off, marking SKB, WSON-6:

Since you were focused on TI parts ...

Also, this is a good resource (it was offline yesterday):

In my experience, Bose does not support their products.  I have been stonewalled by them in my attempts to repair their stuff.

Because of that, I tell people to avoid the brand.

I don't have any Bose kit but to be fair to them most other brands would likely stonewall you if asking for repair info or parts.
It's the way of this disposable world we live in unfortunately  :--

Maybe you know some brands that encourage repairs?

I generally have no trouble getting parts and schematics and even direct help from different companies.  I used to run a repair shop and have hundreds of companies on my white list.  Bose however doesn't fall into that category.  Their stuff is overpriced anyway.
