Breadboard double-sided tape?
« on: July 18, 2023, 10:43:44 pm »
I have on occasion actually used the sticky tape on the back of breadboards for its intended use: to stick it to something. Just like with most pressure-sensitive adhesives, after a few days, let alone years, it is impossible to simply remove it; either the foam gets split, or the contacts of the breadboard get pulled, as the adhesion to whatever it was stuck to is too strong. In any case, the tape needs replacement if the breadboard is to be used again.

What would be a good brand of tape to use? I have tried the four different kinds (mostly differing in color and size) of 3M VHB tape that I get at Home Depot (international equivalent: Leroy Merlin, Praktiker, B&Q, etc), but it does not stick to porous surfaces, and it's definitely an overkill.  On the other hand, the generic 3M foam mounting tape is not strong enough.

Suggestions?

thick sticky silicone or alike paste ?
means its sticky surface could be sacrificed when being detached

Try double sided tape designed for walls / hanging pictures. They generally are easily releasable -- e.g. the 3M Command Strips.

Not sticky enough. It does not stick properly to the underside of the breadboard. What is the actual tape that pretty much all breadboards use?

Have you tried using a solvent such as isopropanol, acetone or white spirit, to remove it?

I just had a similar use case a couple of days ago.
10 years ago, I sticky-taped a bunch of LEGO buildingg plates to a wooden table; as I converted my sons LEGO room into my daughters party room, the buildingg table had to be reverted.
Expecting the very worst, I was able to just pull them off, using quite some force though. Table remained undamaged, plates remained undamaged, the tape was actually easy to remove - no residues, no traces, no discoloration on the wood.
AFAIR I used 3M tape for carpets, unfortunately that's not 100% certain. (plain double sided tape, not foam oder fiber)

Relevance? I asked about what kind of tape to use to replace the original one, not how to remove the remnants.

Use the same tape you're currently using and a suitable solvent to remove it. Problem solved.

Try from Aliexpress so called nano tape. It is double sided clear tape that can be removed later without residue. They advertize that it should be able to reuse by just washing it, but I haven't had luck in it holding the second use.
