broke jumper wire?? HP 6177A. What is this failure mode?

I got the C version, and it works, and its a bit of a disappointment.
They fixed the horrible construction at the expense of the front panel. This one does not have the heli-pot decade counter on the potentiometer, and the banana's are not gold.
I think I will replace some parts between the units to get the best of both worlds.
I wonder if it was really hard to transfer the design while maintaining the price point. ???

And the C version really buzzes alot. Not the high pitched capacitor noise, but a buzz. I think its the transformer but I need to check with a silicone tube. I think it might need a vacuum varnish dip.
I also need to go through the parts list and see how many of the metal oxide resistors are compatible with the C version, to replace the old composite resistors there.. I would like to get rid of those. Looks like I need a new axial electrolytic too.
Then it needs a potentiometer swap because its kinda jumpy, transistor grease (MX4) and cleaning of all the hardware that is used for grounding + grease, and front panel banana jack replacements into gold ones.
coppercone2:
Ok, I replaced 1/2 of the parts. And its a 6181 not a 6177 now.
Anyway, it looks like it still works. I need to replace a few more capacitors, a handful of resistors.
It looks like the banana jacks on the A version are actually brass, not gold plated, so I will leave that alone.
I am tempted to try to mod the shunts with better resistors, but it looks like alot of work for unclear benefit.

What causes this kind of failure? Some kind of deep corrosion? strain? defective wire? its single strand BTW

If wire is cut with pliers you'd expect that surfaces are bright.
"Naturally" cut should have more matte surface, crystals decide so line is not straight and light scatters.
