[Solved] Cap leak cleaning?
« on: July 09, 2017, 02:15:41 pm »
Hello!

Iam currently replacing caps on an old Super Nintendo board. One of them have leaked.
It seems that it have gotten under the soldermask.
Now, what is the best method to make it stop eating the trace? Should i "remove" the solder mask over the affected area and clean it.
Please see the attached image..

Thanks!

I'd try a glass fiber brush/pen and IPA. Use the brush gingerly.

I find the mask flakes off pretty easily when it gets like that.  Post up pics once you have it clean so we can see how it came out.
I'm new here, but I tend to be pretty gregarious, so if I'm out of my lane please call me out.

I like to immerse, soak and gently scrub boards to make sure all traces of electrolyte are gone.  The solder mask in your photo looks like it will flake off easily.  Use an antistatic brush.

So the glassfiber brush is great!

Ive cleaned as much as i dared. Some dark spots left under the microscope. But i dont want to eat on the trace.

Will have a go at some scrap boards with the overcoat-pen now and then Close this up.

So far:
