Caps leaking underneath?
« on: February 04, 2024, 07:51:37 am »
Old Amstrad power supply out of a PC2286.

Going to fix it for a little project.

I don't do a lot of repairs.

I like my failed capacitors to be nice and bulgy. Reckon these have leaked underneath? Maybe from the top then the goop has made it under the board? Perhaps the machine was stored at an angle.

Bulging does only happen, when in use - when the computer has just been stored away, the rubber seal failed and the cap leaked. Absolutely common issue.

Those Nichicon PL caps are peeing conductive /corrosive electrolyte, this is getting very common with 80s & 90s capacitors, the seals seem to fail around the negative lead.

I recommend you remove them, clean the board & fit some quality replacements, from a reputable supplier (not ebay amazon Ali etc) . Check the others too.

A visit to mouser and it's now going again.

Was lazy and just replaced the big caps.
