CD player VFD fault symptomatic of other problems?
« on: March 30, 2020, 02:09:12 pm »

CD Player - Musical Fidelity X-Ray

This is the problem on the surface, could this be the driver for the VFD causing a problem?

If so, is it possible that whatever the problem could be linked to the unpredictable jumping the player does when playing a CD?

The KSS-240A assembly has been replaced (which made it behave better but not cured).
The rails and guides have been dismantled, cleaned, re-greased and reassembled.

Or is it more likely that these two faults are unlinked.
Many thanks for any interest taken  :)

It's like the correct voltage is not being applied to the grids in the VFD to keep the segments that are supposed to be off, fully off. VFDs are multiplexed in sections and function much like a vacuum tube.

This could be a driver issue but since you say there are other faults with the unit, I would suspect likely a power supply problem. Check all power supply voltages to see if they are correct, and also measure the amount of ripple on each output. Probably some bad capacitors causing a high ripple and voltages out of tolerance.

Thanks TheMG, I'll start there  :-+

I think I have already asked this but it can't hurt to ask again.  Does anyone know where I can find a service manual for the X-Ray?

I had a very similar problem on a DAT machine. Turned out to be a failed Zener diode in the power supply, which meant that two voltages which were supposed to be different, weren't.
