I got a used Circuit Specialists CSI 860 hot air rework unit. It seems to work OK, except when the power switch is turned off, the air goes on full tilt. Is this normal? I assume no because it then would have to be unplugged when not in use. I'm guessing that maybe, when turned off, the air is supposed to run for a bit to cool off the heater, and that maybe a timer is dead. This was a fairly popular cheapo hot air unit, so I'm hoping someone has one and can tell me how it's supposed to behave, if not what to fix. Photo of the unit is attached.

It should auto power off after the heater cooled down to some reasonable temperature, usually around 100 C.

You can't simply interrupt the airflow across the heated element, it would burn out.

Yes, that's what I suspected. The problem is that mine never turns off the air.

I would assume something is broken, I doubt it is supposed to work like that. But I don't have this specific one and never used it. But literally all others I used did the cooldown and shut down automatically.

It's strange the on/off switch is not as it seems. It looks 3 position.
The wand on other brands has a magnet and there is typically a reed switch in the base- so the station knows when it's in the holster and to do a cool-down sequence.
This might not be happening, although it should eventually shut the fan off when temperature is below a safe value.
I'd take it apart...
