adding coating on old litz inductor?
« on: April 01, 2021, 09:06:02 pm »
I have a old litz wire inductor, The coating is not 100% good, there is a few strands of wire that are loose on the outside.

The device is said to be sealed with 'synthetic varnish'.

My go-to for a new device is q-dope which I make with ethyl acetate. Is this safe on 'synthetic varnish"? Otherwise my next choice was transparant epoxy.

Its not a dip, just corrections along the surface.

I did this to loose wires before, but never a litz wire, I am worried it will melt the insulation and short it out. It is made in 1962

it is a general radio product

I have never come across any magnet wire where the insulation (enamel/varnish) was soluble in ethyl acetate. The silk(?) around the individual Litz wires is not soluble either.  That experience includes old wire that had to be scraped or chemically removed and more modern "solderable" insulations.

alright then a thick q-dope sounds like it will fit the bill for the repair with minimum effect
