Help identify this part
« on: March 20, 2022, 05:54:00 pm »
Hello everyone! First post for me as I was searching for answers and discovered this forum.

I have a Cisco switch that was dropped. The power corded was still connected and got pushed in. I opened it up and looks like a couple film capacitors broke off which I can replace. However, there is a part that I'm trying to figure out what it is and where to get a replacement for it.  Attached is a picture of the broken piece, as well as what was inside it, as well as a picture of a similar component that was still intact. It is labeled as "G" and "GT", but I don't know what "G" or "GT" is. The closest I could find doing searches was a GDT, but the pictures of GDTs don't look similar. And what do the color codes mean? The colors are red, black, green (with a larger gap between red and black). See picture.
Any ideas much appreciated. Thanks!

It looks like a gas discharge arrestor. If so, then the device will work without it.

Are there safety concerns if I omit this component? I'm hoping to find a replacement part and solder it on.

What does the color code represent?

The gas discharge tube is just protection against surges and the like, so without it, the device is simply a bit more susceptible.

I did a Google image search for “ gas discharge surge arrester glass axial” and came across a listing for “RLS302 series” which look very much like yours (in particular, the color band spacing). Searching for that in turn took me to this manufacturer site: http://ruilon.com/plugin_series/show/227.html

Unfortunately their datasheets don’t list the color codes, and none of the values unambiguously align with the numeric values of the bands (5-0—2 or 2—0-5). Maybe shoot them a message with the photo and accurate (caliper) measurements of the intact device.

It's just a surge protector, personally I'd just leave it out, but if you want to replace it you should be able to use anything with specs that are appropriate for the line voltage.
