If there is a serial flash memory at U12, then it would be easier to transfer this part to a replacement PCB. OTOH, if U12 is unpopulated, then you will be in trouble because the ROM firmware and "adaptive" data are stored within the embedded flash of the MCU.

hddoracle.com and hddguru.com are good sources of information and firmware tools.
