Component Identification for 3D Printer Repair

Hi,

I am working on a faulty 3D Systems Projet 3510HD 3D printer (I understand that this is pretty common for a 3D systems machine), the software is auto shutting down due to a 'jetstack 2 overtemp' issue.

The temperature reading from the software during a cold startup is 90C on jetstack 2 and 20C (room temp) for jetstack 1. From this I assume that the issue is the jetstack 2 temperature sensor in the print head.

I have disassembled the printer expecting to find a thermocouple or something in the printhead. It wouldn't be that easy. I have found what I think is the thermo-sensor and 3D systems do not make their technical documentation public so I cant even look it up.

I'm happy to do the research to find the specific part type, I just have no idea what it is or what its called.

I haven't the first idea how 3D printers work, but the fact that the sensor has a transparent cone would suggest that it may be an IR temperature sensor. Does this make sense?

ISTM that two of the wires must be the supply (can you measure the voltage?), while the third must be the temperature output. If you can set up an external supply, then perhaps you could heat the sensor with a hair dryer, or aim it at a heat source.

Thanks for the reply fzabkar, that does make sense. Through some googling of IR temperature sensors I found an image of a similar looking device that turned out to be a IR fluid level sensor. So unfortunately this is not what needs replacing.

With a little more research into the print head board I found that it is an OEM xerox print head and the temp sensor is within the jetstack structure (looks like I will have to buy a complete print head replacement)
