Converting a cheap Yihua/WEP 852D+ to be safe
« on: April 09, 2019, 01:57:13 am »
Hi all,

I bought a Yihua/WEP 852D+ from Ebay for cheap because it was great value and recommended.  After I received it I also heard a lot of other things and saw some videos questioning its safety, grounding, etc.

I'm re-acquainting myself with electronics after a very, very long hiatus.

Does anybody know of a guide that shows how to "repair" this SMD iron plus hot air compressor so that it is safe?  Thanks!!

Kind regards,

ubk

I think the mistakes in wiring vary, me and a relative both got one and I think both the switch and fuse on one were on the neutral side and the other the switch was on the hot side, but the fuse was on the neutral. If you do mess with the internal wiring, make sure you are right in what you do to fix it, and generally the ground should be crimped, not soldered to the wire, which I think they usually are.

Thanks for the heads up.  Of course, I'm not going to mess with the insides of a soldering iron unless I know what I'm doing.

However, ensuring that it is grounded properly is an important special case.  Why does ground need to be crimped instead of soldered?

Also, are you saying that in these cheap copies of legitimate soldering irons, the ground is often soldered?

Nevermind the question I asked above, but thank you for mentioning this.  I searched and found the answer to this myself.  It all makes perfect sense.  For example: https://www.eevblog.com/forum/beginners/earthing-why-crimp-and-not-solder/
