Coupler on old Hameg scope
« on: March 18, 2021, 10:11:46 pm »
I retrieved my long lost Hameg HM204-2 from my attic and after a round of Deoxit, it looked pretty good. However, I noticed that one of the couplers from the front panel to a pot had broken. Attempts to glue the plastic back together failed as the torque of the set screw just splits it again (see pic).

I can find metal replacements on Amazon that should work, but they are metal rather than plastic. Would this be an issue? The coupler that is broken joins a 3" metal rod to a metal push switch/pot wiper for the trigger level control.

I could not imagine this being a safety issue, but possibly this might introduce some noise. Does anyone see any concerns with this repair? Not really important as this is my backup for my Siglent, but its always nice to have good working test equipment.

Thanks in advance,

Phil

I think metal should work fine.

Try drilling two 0.035 holes (one each side of set screw) parallel to the shaft and use some SS safety tie wire, twisted tightly.
Glue and most plastics rarely work unless specifically intended.
Two long #1 bolts and nuts (m-1) would also work in place of the tie wire.

Guys,

Thanks for the responses. I think i will just buy a coupler from Amazon and see how it works out. If it is not satisfactory for any reason and can try the drilling and screwing approach.

Thanks,

Phil

Might also try a chunk of vinyl or rubber tubing. I've made couplers that way that lasted in more demanding service.

At my last company. I broke down an HM203-5 for parts (boss did not want to pay for output transistors).

PM me if you want his details.

His website is

http://www.conference-services.co.uk/index.php

The guy is not technical, and he has had no staff since I retired four years ago, so you will have to send him a good photograph of what you need. Also, tell him it is in bin 505, which is at the very back of the workshop, adjacent to the roller shutters.

Price wise, I would start by offering £0.10 plus postage; I know he is wanting to sell up.

Before you get excited and make him an offer for everything, there are around 100k of spare parts, and 20k of service manuals - whoever takes it need a big warehouse.

Some weeks ago, I had the same problem.
At first, i made one part on my lathe out of isolating material.
Then I remarked that I need some more parts.

I found a link and ordered there some of the couplers, because they are very cheap and it is not worth to make the parts by my own.

The dealer is
 https://www.sky-messtechnik.de/reparaturdienst-service/hameg-ersatzteile.
It was no problem to get the parts within 2 or 3 days. The guy is very helpful. You can ask for parts, which are not on the list and if you have luck you can buy this parts to for a moderate price.
I don't know if he is sending the parts to US.

regards
fossi

Thanks everyone for the responses. I will contact various folks as the second picture in the last post is exactly what i need. The Amazon coupler i bought works, but it is big and looks really ugly (bright metallic blue!).

Thanks,

Phil

Maybe I can add to this...

I needed replacement for the red plastic part used on the vertical amplifier board for the "5x magnification".

My solution has to be printed in two halfs (one has to be mirrored) and then glued together.
