DMM Continuity Beeper Stuck On...
« on: January 04, 2015, 04:25:16 am »
I have a Klein Tools CL200 Clamp Meter I use at work and it gets loaned out a lot. It was recently returned to me with a malfunction in the continuity test. When I turn the dial and set it for continuity the beeper just sounds continuously. It happens whether test leads are attached or not. It's not uncommon to test continuity of light fixtures at work then be required to check mains voltages of up to 240. I wonder if someone burned something out by having it set wrong? Nothing on the circuit board looks bad. What should I be looking/testing for?  Thanks

Probably arced over inside the switch, or it has a shorted protection diode or MOV on the input. Use another meter to see if the input leads have a voltage on then in continuity mode, depending on the meter it will be between 200mV and 2V. If nothing use the other meter to measure the resistance of the input.

I have just acquired a new Extech EX330 so I'll give a poke around and see what I find. Guess this is why it's a good idea to have more than one meter.

Just wanted to follow up and say that I did not continue to look for a fix for this unit. Upon further inspection I noticed that some plastic hold downs in the case were so worn they were no longer holding the circuit board, and thus the LCD and buttons, in place. Even if I fixed it, it would still not be 100% so I deemed it not worth the effort. I got an EX330 and EX430 both at very reasonable prices. Really like the 430 actually. It was only $3 more than the 330 and is TRMS.
