DR TALBOTS INFARED THERMOMETER

Hi all i have a doctor .talbots ir thermometer,i brought it cheap as not working,it lights up and seems to measure ok,it has what looks like a mirrored concave with some sort of sensor behind it,mounted above the mirrored reflector looks like a lased diode,if its a laser it cant be seen to work,i got this to check a faulty ebike battery to look for different temp 18650 cells,i assume it has a red laser diode to aim it?,any clues welcome.TIA

Yes the purpose of the laser is only to aid in aiming.

well in that case the laser part of mine is dead,as nothing lights up at the front of the unit,just the lcd display at the rear !
