Dumpster diving score: 19inch leaking LCD screen worth repairing?
mianchen:
got this from a neighbour's skip, it turns on, everything works fine except there is a 4.5 x 1.5 inch blob on the screen. Is it fixable?
jaqie:
big fat *NO*.
The LCD screen itself is broken, and those cost as much as the monitor does new to replace, on average. It can be worth it to replace them in a notebook, but that's simply because there's a whole computer in there besides them.
If the LCD screen shows any signs of busted, it's scrap.
I suggest maybe scrounging inside for some nice spare parts, besides that... it's trash. Sorry.
mianchen:
I think 'no' might be the answer. The 'leaking' blob can be pushed around, but I can't get rid of it after a few minutes of 'massaging'.
tom66:
I have seen dark blobs go away after heating but that looks like impact to the panel.
mariush:
No.
You might be able to sell the power supply board inside and maybe the video board if you keep it on sale on eBay for a few months. But you'd only make 10-20$ after losing a few dollars on eBay fees for relisting it several times.
Or you could pull out the power supply and the cfl tubes that are on the sides of the panel and make yourself a lamp (but be careful, the cfl tubes get 700-1400v from the power supply.
