Fluke 196 Repair Turmoils
« on: March 02, 2026, 04:28:57 pm »
I acquired a Fluke 196 Scopemeter recently. It would appear to be in decent condition, it powers on and the meter portion operates as expected. Unfortunately, neither scope channel works. I get no waveform on either channel, and the oscilloscope portion is what I got it for, I have plenty of meters :). I was wondering if anyone had this issue before and could point me in the right direction for repair. After some google searches I found the service manual, and everything for power seems to be in order. Thanks for any advice in advance! Let me know if I forgot to mention anything important.

Here is a picture of the board, I don’t see any obvious damage on either side.

It should be something common to both channels if you get nothing on either of them, unless somehow both channel frontends were blown up by an idiot user or such, though that's ... mostly unlikely...

Hopefully this is a common issue someone else can point to, because it's hard to diagnose a scope without another scope

You can start tracing the signal in from the input. Do you have any sort of signal generator, or even a 555 timer circuit, or BJT oscillator circuit to use ? If it was low enough frequency and a few volts peak to peak, it would be easy to see with a DMM too, if you don't actually have another oscilloscope.

I have had many people tell me that without another scope things will be tough. I might get one of those cheap 3 in 1s off of amazon to have some sort of oscilloscope/signal generator even if they aren't great.
Thank you both for the advice, I will let you know what happens if I get some more equipment or have some big revelation.

Hi,

Try searching on the website:
"Fluke 199C no scope traces".
