Somebody apparently gave one of the phones at work a bungee-jumping lesson off a counter. I was told that it stopped working, and when I got there the ethernet connector was floating around in the case with the exterior cable still attached. Since the phone gets both power and data over this cable it wasn't working too well.
It's just a surface mount connector soldered to the board. I've soldered it back on, and it works, but I'm thinking about gluing the connector down to try and avoid future damage if the same thing happens again (worst case would be ripping pads off the board). What do you think? Leave it alone? Glue it down with something hard (epoxy)? Something soft (RTV)? Or install an external strain relief? Or just make the cable long enough that the case hits the floor before there is any strain on the connector?
