Ethernet Connector Pulled Off IP Phone
« on: February 24, 2015, 10:31:26 pm »
Somebody apparently gave one of the phones at work a bungee-jumping lesson off a counter.  I was told that it stopped working, and when I got there the ethernet connector was floating around in the case with the exterior cable still attached.  Since the phone gets both power and data over this cable it wasn't working too well.

It's just a surface mount connector soldered to the board.  I've soldered it back on, and it works, but I'm thinking about gluing the connector down to try and avoid future damage if the same thing happens again (worst case would be ripping pads off the board).  What do you think?  Leave it alone?  Glue it down with something hard (epoxy)?  Something soft (RTV)?  Or install an external strain relief?  Or just make the cable long enough that the case hits the floor before there is any strain on the connector?

Last chance then replace the phone next time it flies !
Don't ask a question if you aren't willing to listen to the answer.

H.E.B.K.A.C.
Hard Epoxy Between Keyboard And Chair
I didn't take it apart.
I turned it on.

The only stupid question is, well, most of them...

Save a fuse...Blow an electrician.

I did a similar repair to a Samsung R519 laptop:

The PCB tracks had been ripped off too, so I had to wire them back to the ethernet transformer.

A product called "E6000" should do the trick, better than "Gorilla Glue" in some cases such as this.
Available at your local Home Depot store

Recharged Volt-Nut
