(done) Evil blue ALPS pot is noisy
« on: January 06, 2024, 08:39:15 am »
My recent purchase did come with a very noisy pot.
Unfortunately, it seems like these are now Unobtainium. (X3 with A curve; X3 is not even listed by ALPs any more)
So I have only few options:
0) just wiggle it around
1) Open and clean
2) use X4 and cut legs of the 4th pot, there is enough space on the PCB; however A curve seems unavailable, too
3) use X4 with B curve
4) bodge in a different pot
5) recreate a X3 pot by combining segments from donor pots with the original axle; is that even possible?

I would like to avoid 3) and 4) and 5).
So that leaves 2) - if I could source an A curve specimen, or the cleaning option. Any suggestions for "what to use"? I read about carefully splitting the parts and to use the small gap. Flood? A complete disassembly is probably not possible by the looks.

Any suggestions are welcome. (For now, I'm probably trying to simply trun the pot for half an hour or so, that machine probably sat for a decade or two. Then using some TESLANOL OSZILLIN, and turn again...)

Looks like it comes apart. Open and clean would be my choice. Even if you just open it up enough to get some suitable spray into it.

So after about 200 turns of the pot, the issue is now fixed. Probably just two decades of corrosion. Will add some pot spray later.

For your viewing pleasure, this is it (made by Philips/Studer, the first standalone CD recorder, which cost me a whopping 50 EUR...):
