Ferrite transformer
« on: January 26, 2021, 02:31:12 am »
Hi, as you can see I managed to drop and break the ferrite 'cover' for this inductor while repairing it. I can see a bazillion different types of ferrite transformer bobbins etc but nothing like this. Can anyone help me with search terms to find this style of ferrite transformer part? OD of the inner section is 15mm.

Alternatively would a ferrite bead/tube of 15mm ID give me approximately the same inductor characteristics? Out of an audio eq circuit so precise value isn't critical but reasonable matching of characteristics to neighbouring inductors is desirable.

Can just glue the fragments back on, assuming it's not so many pieces this becomes impractical.  Superglue is good.

How many pins are connected?  If only two, and you can guess the value (you can measure it too, but it will probably now be higher than intended, if it's not completely broken I mean), and it's near a common commercial value, you can replace it.  If more, good luck.

If it still [nearly] works, and you know the value it needs to be or can tune it (based on circuit response?), just put a chunk of ferrite beside it, and glue it in place where it gives the right value. e.g.

FYI: a transformer has more than two pins.  An inductor has exactly two pins.  (Sometimes "coupled inductor" is used as well, which is a type of "transformer".)

It shattered into many small pieces, impractical to glue it back together. I put it back into the circuit without the cover and it seems close enough guitar purposes.

Occasionally you'll come across an inductor with an added magnet when a less linear response is wanted.
May this be the case here as it's for "guitar purposes"?
