Finding a 12 volt 2 watt power supply for a turntable
« on: April 08, 2016, 02:08:21 am »
Somebody gave me a panasonic record player the other day, Its probably not worth fixing... but i think it would be cool to modify it slightly as practice since im still a beginner... Anyway, it used to be soldered directly to the board but somebody cut the wire, The back says 12 volts 2 watts... Ive never heard watts being used as a measurement on power supplies but can someone redirect me to something thatll work? i also would prefer a matching female connector so i can do a case mod and make it detachable this time around. The adapter must be for united states use, so 120 voltage is needed.

12V at 2 Watts is a current of 2W/12V= 167mA. Is it AC or is it DC?

Is it just me, or does 2W seem kind of small.

I would guess ac from the wall but it converts it to dc right?

I found some info here: http://www.vinylengine.com/turntable_forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=70209

It seems the turntable was part of an integrated system and you only have the bare wires coming out of it? If so, first you need to identify the two 12V DC supply pins (there is a DC symbol in the back). You could open it and look on the PCB, maybe there are silkscreen markings that tell you what each cable does.

The power supply can be any regulated 12V DC adapter supplying at least 160mA (2W=12V*0.167A).

I'd suggest going to to a thrift store.  Many of them have a bunch of old wall warts and laptop power supplies.  Finding a 12v power supply should be fairly easy.

So anything over 160mA? doesnt matter if its more? what if its a few amps? And how do i tell if its regulated... I dont know if it was part of a setup, ive seen them alone and together, the board says which is power, right channel/left channel so that should be a easy solder job...

Common wall wart will say something like input 100-230VAC, output 12VDC at 1-3A, which indicates it is a SMPS that provides a regulated output. Any small in line power brick, like those you get for small LCD displays, routers and printers, so long as it is 12V will do this job.  Either you have a dead whatever with a working power brick ( LCD with broken display glass, printer with a dead print head, old router that got upgraded to a new Wifi spec) will provide a suitable supply. Just needs to have the 100-230VAC input range, and will be a light unit because it does not have a heavy iron cored transformer running at 50/60Hz inside it.
