Title: Fluke 179 - AC range not working
Post by: gaztech on July 30, 2019, 11:35:33 am
Hi guys,

Dropped this post to the test equipment section, then realised that there was actually a "Repair" section. Not really sure which one it should be in but here goes:

My trusty Fluke 179 AC Range stopped working after another employee "borrowed" it!  I've had this meter for many years and have never had a single issue with it. Just goes to prove the old adage "Don't lend out your tools!".

I need to get this fixed pronto as I use it all the time. If I measure mains voltage it only reads a few mV. DC volts measure ok, resistance measurements are also ok. I'm thinking that a diode bridge is most likely blown out.

However, before I take it apart blind I thought it worth getting some advice from the guys in the know! What should I be looking for - or better, does anyone know what is causing this fault?

Please help - and thanks in advance!

Schematics for the Fluke 179 can be found by emailing Mark

The 77IV and 170 series share common pcb so it should help you narrow down why AC is not working.

In addition, take the meter apart and post clear focused pictures of both sides of the pcb.  Perhaps something is obviously bad or blown?

Does AC Amps work?  Your friend may have blown your fuses as well?

I forgot to mention that if you are the original owner and bought it from a Fluke authorized dealer (with proof), you may be able to send it back to Fluke for warranty repair.

Their terms and conditions for the warranty repair is typically the 2nd or 3rd page of the user manual.  You can find the manual on Fluke's website.  You will also find how they define "lifetime" warranty.
