Fluke 189 won't measure VAC, VDC, Ohms, but works for Current
« on: September 02, 2022, 05:59:43 am »
This Fluke 189 was stored (without batteries) for roughly 10 years.

When I turned it on was beeping with "LEADS" displayed, I cleaned and use a little hot air on the terminals and solved the warning.

It's measuring Current perfectly, but other measures (VAC, VDC, Ohms, etc...) don't work.

Inside, visually is perfect (wasn't ever open before), and the supercap is like new, with no minimal sign of leaking.

Any guess what's the problem and fixing? Thank you.

i would carefully dismantle it  to check the dial contacts if they are ok or oxidated, if the pcb traces are clean, no oxydation too

it was stored without the batteries ??  no corroded battery clips ?

Terminal contacts are broken.  This one costs almost $40, ouch...  no substitutes?

no substitutes you have to put an original one, you have some on Ebay, yess it may be expensive  but  once repaired  it's a very good meter, it's a good investment

If it got dropped or banged around, also check the jack-detect LED+phototransistor did not get trashed, they are fragile too.
The input jack assembly seems to be going for around $45 OUCH when you really might need just the metal part.

Come on, I know that it costs 40$, but this was the top of the line DMM from Fluke before the 289 and still is preferred by people instead of the 28x line (I own the 289 and would gladly trade it for a 189).

Didn't it deserve such?

Tried an 289,  bulky, slow ... nada nada     ditched it   happier with 2x 189 and an Amprobe Am140

Finding or having a good 189 with no battery clips corrosion is kinda tough, and mostly  having a good enclosure with no broken or cracked screw post(s)  is even better
