Repair using an old nail
« on: July 04, 2017, 09:36:39 pm »
This was also the first time I could sit in the thing I was fixing, as I was fixing it.

The hand controller for an electric lift/reclining chair, had a broken cable strain relief. The chair is pretty crucial for my 87 yo mum. When packing tools to go round and fix it, I expected I'd make a replacement using 3M rubber tape, that I could build into a suitable tapered shape.

But that turned out to not be a great idea. The cable is surprisingly stiff. Mostly it needed something to anchor it in the remnant of the existing cable entry. A solid wire tie would have done, but had I thought to bring any? No.

So, an improvised cable clamp. One old nail, bent into a circle with what I had, then squeezed to grip the cable tightly. Done.

PS. The drill bit I used as a mandrel, is rusty because I'd found it on the ground in the local supermarket parking lot earlier that day. Lucky, since I didn't have anything of suitable size in my toolbag, but the drill was still in my shirt pocket. The perfect size.

Nice creative solution with the available resources. Guess this should be a hit with the steampunk crowd, although for best effect you should have used a brass nail :P.
