Fluke 289 Will Not Power On
« on: March 14, 2018, 01:05:35 pm »
Occasionally my Fluke 289 will not power on.  However, when you remove and reinstall the battery pack the meter starts working again.  It’s happened twice in about 20 power on cycles.  The batteries and all connections are good and it has the latest firmware (1.16) installed.  Any ideas???

Thanks,
Mack

I have not had this issue with mine, but the 289 does have a limited lifetime warranty. Might want to check with Fluke.

Have you checked all the battery contacts? If battery compartment removal helps, it could be related to those.

Unfortunately I am not the original owner, so I'm not eligible for warranty.

I've cleaned and retensioned all contacts:
To the batteries;
To the three battery holder contacts; and
To the internal battery contacts to the pc board.

I popped the small fuse in mine a couple hours ago! Asshole eh!  ???

There's a thread somewhere on the forum called  "289 not quite fixed" you may want to ask in that thread the guys seem to really know their 289's.

Hope you get it fixed buddy.

Occasionally my Fluke 289 will not power on.
Can you hook the meter up to a DC volt power supply and check the current draw upon startup?

Unfortunately I am not the original owner, so I'm not eligible for warranty.

Fluke have always stood by their lifetime warranty whenever I’ve sent meters back for repair. I’ve never been asked for proof of purchase or original ownership, always been a ‘no questions asked’ experience.

Which is how it should be. Well done Fluke.

YMMV.  Some people report what you have experienced and some have been denied.

No harm in trying.

For sure no harm in trying. That would be awesome for you if Fluke themselves fix it.

Conversations with Fluke (service rep. and product specialist) confirm that: because this meter has the “Si” designation, it is not supported in North America.  They explained that the Si meters are manufactured to the same design specification as the U.S. Fluke; however, because they are destined for the Asian market, they only measure in degrees C and not F.  I have another 289 and they are identical in all other respects.

As suggested I measured the current.  Both meters are the same at approx 25 ma.

I’ve been leaving the meter on a few hours at a time, as well as cycling on/off for the last couple of days, but have not been able to duplicate the snag.

Thanks for weighing in everybody.

Hopefully the problem has disappeared up it's own arse then buddy and is gone right?

I didn't know about the ones destined for the Asian market either not doing F* measurement.
