Fluke 39 LCD screen - barely readable
« on: September 18, 2016, 02:16:17 pm »
I have this 20 year old or so Fluke 39 power quality meter that has been working fine for me, until suddenly losing almost all screen contrast. The display is barely readable. Adjusting the screen contrast buttons will take the display from invisible to barely readable. It isn't power, batteries are fresh.

Can someone give me a starting point for when I open it up? What has most likely failed? Probably old capacitors, right?
I do have access to decent test gear - multimeter, digital scope, adjustable power supply...

Thanks
Chip

If the display isn't discoloured then it's probably the Zebra strip that connects the LCD panel (edit: glass) to the PCB. It's normally possible to un-clip or unscrew the LCD housing and give the strip and PCB fingers with IPA.

Thanks, Gyro. That would fit with a sudden change.
