Fluke 77 Series II- Protection Device of Some Sort Cracked
« on: August 12, 2020, 09:51:19 pm »
Seen this on other posts regarding the 77, cracked high voltage protection device, but I'm not competent enough to know how to find a replacement.  Some help would be appreciated.  2KV 9527.  Thanks!

That’s actually supposed to be like that. It’s fine :)

That's crazy!  But I've never seen such a straight failure induced crack, so you must be right!  Thanks!

Yep, completely normal, sparkgaps are designed like that.

They are very similar to a normal capacitor, but one of the steps in the manufacturing process the literally cut a slice into the top of it.

This exposes the edge of the plates of the capacitor to air, which has a lower breakdown voltage than the ceramic dielectric. The idea is to provide a discharge path in the event of over voltage to avoid damaging the dielectric.
