A few tenuous days later and give or take a bit of hair that i ripped out while reading their manual, i figured it out i think.

I think it was one bad solder joint on the new tants. I say that because i redid them and suddenly, IT LIVES!

All was not in vain however, that big 2200u was well on it's way to going bang.
A hopeless addict (and slave) to TEA and a firm believer that high frequency is little more than modern hoodoo.

Yep, thought it would be a bad connection somewhere pissing about with the supply rails with volts being higher on unregulated ones at least than what the manual states usually is because the loading has been removed and a bad joint can do that. Well done  :-+
