Fluke 87 (base model) worth it to repair?
« on: November 14, 2015, 10:00:46 pm »
Hey all-
I am at the office so cannot snap a picture, but I have a Fluke 87 True RMS meter (not a III, IV, V but the base model).

The female banana input jack surround has broken.  The jack still works and I am wondering if it needs to be fixed, from what I can tell, the plastic above the actual metal contact of the jack serves to stop you from pushing the banana plug too far into the unit and doing damage.   I suppose it is there to stop accidental arcing if those ends of your leads wiggled out, but can anyone posit why I should fix it if the unit otherwise works perfectly??  Thanks
Tim
Oh...I mainly use it to test 300-450 volt DC voltages in tube amps and sometimes mA of current as well.  I have it and a 187.  Is there anything the 87 does better than the 187.  I am thinking of liquidating one of them.

Modemhead's DIY repair blog for the above problem.

If it were me and I could only have one, I would choose the 187.

Pros of 187 vs 87
- 50,000 count vs 20,000 count
- 50,000 count is 4 update/sec vs 20,000 is 1 update/sec
- dual display vs single display
- temperature vs none
- capacitance reading up to 50mF vs 5uF
- dBm
- setup menu for various options like backlight timeout, power off, etc vs none

Cons of 187 vs 87
- 72 hour battery life using 4 AA vs 500 hours using 9V
- 187 is bigger and bulkier than 87
- no service manual and schematics for 187
