Fluke 87 switches itself on sometimes
« on: October 16, 2020, 02:38:18 pm »
Hi folks,

My old Fluke 87 turns itself on sometimes, even when main rotary switch is in off position.
Is anybody here with the same phenomena (and solution) ?

Never happened to me, I only own one 87V, dunno which board revision it is (probably there are a few), have you checked the switch contacts? Are they clean?

Yes, it happens to my original model 87.  It will also flicker on and off.  I took it apart but it was not obvious why it would do it.
Forcing the dial against the "off" stop will cause it to turn on, so I back it off a bit to avoid that.

That is exactly what happens to my original model 87. Now I'll clean the dial contacts more deeply, let us see the result.
Moving the dial near/around the "off"position is not a real solution.

Following. I have an old 87 at work that’s doing this. Haven’t gotten around to trying to fix it yet.

OK, all. This is a common problem.

Just clean the main function switch and the encoder switch on the other side of the board.

Don't just spray cleaner willy nilly. A drop here and there at the function switch contacts, exercise it through it's settings, and a dry swab on the circuit board portion of the encoder switch to clear any particle residue.

End of problem.

I did exactly as promised (and as above), the problem now seems to be gone  :)
