fluke 8808a
« on: October 21, 2024, 10:05:06 pm »
Hello, I have a Fluke 8808a that was always measuring continuities with the beeping sound. After analyzing it, I came to the conclusion that it is the components E1 and E2 and I don't know what components they are? Can anyone help me find out the reference.

They are part of the instrument's protection circuit, probably objects like these .

.... and here  you can find some more clues.
In another user's instrument (although different in appearance) they are marked TAIYO AG20

In the last link I posted the user GAD says this, I don't have this dmm so I can't confirm.

Just to be clear, spark gaps should read open circuit when doing a resistance or continuity test. You will probably need to pop out a leg to test them properly (just in case something else is in parallel with them). I don't think I've ever seen a failed spark gap without other obvious damage (burnt tracks etc).

Anyway, if you are sure that it is these parts that are faulty, then going by the red - black - red stripes,  BK12010002 looks like it might be a suitable replacement.

One difference between SK20 and BK12010002 is that the first has a minimum insulation resistance of 10GOhm while the second has 100MOhm (if the datasheet of the latter is not wrong......).
For a dmm that on the 200mV/2V ranges has an input impedance > 10GOhm this can be an important difference.

Good point. I was just going by the appearance. Interesting that the plastic encapsulated part has better leakage characteristics than the glass one. Sadly I lost my old lab/workshop so my Keithley 237 has gone into storage, otherwise I could have tried to measure it. I think I have some old GDTs and SPGs left over from when I worked in the land line telephone business.

Yes, I too would have expected a better device with glass insulation.
Looking more closely at the photo posted by the OP in the fourth post, only now I notice that the spark gaps do not seem to be factory mounted but would seem to be a subsequent repair, especially E2 gives me this impression.

I thank you in advance for your help, it seems to have been repaired but the photo was only taken after unsoldering, I have difficulty in getting the component but I keep trying. Thank you
