My ultimately reliable HP 3457A Meter finally had it's first failure, not bad for 30 years? Powered it up, saw a POST error out of the corner of my eye. Went to get some water and came back and no power, main fuse was blown. Smell told me tantalum cap but my nose pointed me to the general area of that Schaffner Line Filter or the transformer on the Common Chassis PS. All checked out? Opened up the Floating Common PSU side and started poking around. Found a dead short on the -15V output. There it was, I knew that smell all to well. C922, big black ring around the entire package and wide open.
All it's identification mostly unreadable, schematic and HP parts list said there was several others used in this chassis. On the hunt to see if I could find one or more of the others. Found several of them, Sprague 35V 1uF Tantalum's.
That lead me to:

Should be here today, also picked up Line Filter since everyone says they've had issues with them failing. It's open, I'm getting all that tantalums replaced! I want this to last another 30 years.
Keep everyone abreast if this solves it.
